The Society of Biochar Initiatives – BIOCHARSOC

Sustainable biochar is a powerfully simple tool to fight global warming. This 2,000 year-old practice converts agricultural waste into a soil enhancer that can hold carbon, boost food security, and discourage deforestation. It’s one of the few technologies that is relatively inexpensive, widely applicable and quickly scalable.

The mission of TSBI is to promote and encourage the development of Biochar Systems that follow the Cradle to Grave sustainability guidelines. To attain the above we at TSBI will support the generation, review and dissemanation of information on all aspects of Biochar and develop sustainability guidelines and monitor and evaluate biochar projects and systems against framed and rapidly evolving guidelines.

TSBI was formed on the 27th January, 2010 as a NGO by the Founder President, Perses Bilimoria, a passionate earth child and geo engineering initiator along with six other, more passionate, grass root workers all of whom, are commited to the sustainable developement of Biochar in India. Amongst, the other founder members are Dr.Priyadarshini Karve of ARTI ( Appropiate Rural Technology Institute) and a recepient of the world reknown, Ashden Awards twice, Dr Sai Bhaskar Reddy, of GEO, instrumental in developing grass roots initiatives in AP and now in other parts of the world.

It will be the endeavour of TSBI to ensure good industry practises in the field of Biochar, to ensure public confidence and goodwill amongst all stakeholders, which shall be instrumental in taking this relatively inxpensive geo engineeing initiative forward in India. TSBI will also be involved with the development and promotion of Biochar producing, low cost Smokeless Stoves on our subcontinent.

Most importantly TSBI will work hard to bring Biochar forward as a Global Response to Climate Change and Soils recovery.
